Knauf Insulation, the UK’s leading supplier of insulation products, has supplied Rocksilk® Rock Mineral Wool Insulation to the UK’s leading rock group, The Darkness. Rock mineral wool has excellent acoustic insulation properties and Rocksilk® Universal Slab was chosen to keep sound break-out to a minimum at Dan Hawkin’s new rehearsal studio in Norfolk.
But staying at the top means practice, and when guitarist Dan Hawkins decided to convert a building on his farm ‘somewhere in Norfolk’ into a rehearsal studio, ‘keeping the neighbours happy’ meant that acoustic insulation had to receive top billing!
Harry Hawkins, father of the band’s brothers and in charge of the conversion work, said that the decision to use Knauf Insulation’s products was an easy one. “We needed information about insulation materials and made a number of enquiries. Knauf Insulation was the only company to contact us after a local builders’ merchant, Ridgeons in Lowestoft, contacted them on our behalf. They rang and then sent a technical advisor along to give us the advice we needed.”
Although both acoustic and thermal insulation were needed, the overriding concern was to keep sound break-out to a minimum. Both density and thickness affect sound absorption and, as rock mineral wool is manufactured at a relatively higher density, Knauf Insulation recommended it in preference to glass mineral wool. Rock mineral wool also has excellent thermal insulation properties and is non-combustible having a Euroclass A1 classification, the highest rating possible (which may also be of benefit to a band whose pyrotechnic displays are legendary!).
Consequently, two layers of 100 mm thick Rocksilk® RS60 Universal Slab were installed between the rafters in the building’s new roof and a single layer in an independent lining system on the inside of its masonry walls. Rocksilk® Universal Slab is a semi-rigid slab of rock mineral wool designed for multi-purpose use and in any form of construction. Slabs are available in eight grades of compressive strength, in thickness ranging from 25 to 100 mm and in a standard size of 1200 x 600 mm.
The building’s concrete floor needed to be insulated thermally and, to do so, a floating-floor built on a 65 mm thick layer of Polyfoam® Floorboard Standard was used. Manufactured from high-performance extruded polystyrene, Polyfoam® Floorboard was designed specifically for insulating floors: apart from its high compressive strength, the closed-cell structure of extruded polystyrene is both resistant to and unaffected by moisture. Polyfoam® Floorboard is supplied in 2438 x 600 mm sheets and in a range of thicknesses across four grades – Domestic, Standard, Extra and Super – to suit the intended use of the finished floor.
