With excellent thermal and acoustic properties, Knauf Insulation’s Earthwool products have been installed to a project featured on Channel Four’s popular TV programme, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. The project was undertaken to demonstrate what could be built within permitted development rights.
The project was managed by Hamish Boden from William Hardie Design who commented: “We were given the task to create a garden studio, snug den and butterfly house within a small London garden for George Clarke and his children, The challenge was to create something beautiful and enhance the outdoor living space. However, we wanted to build this new structure under permitted development rights, to show the programme’s viewers that it is a possible achievement.
“One of the main objectives of the build was to make the most of the available space, we kept the wall build up to a minimum and utilised every millimetre available. For that reason choosing the right products was key; we required building materials that were readily available and wouldn’t compromise the design or function. Knauf Insulation’s Earthwool insulation products ticked all the boxes as the thermal and acoustic characteristics allowed us to maintain a high level of insulation in a minimal build up, making the building functional all year round.”
Knauf Insulation supplied 50 slabs of its Earthwool glass mineral wool EcoBatt and 48 slabs of its Earthwool rock mineral wool Building Slab to the project.
Hamish continued: “The insulation products supplied by Knauf Insulation provided excellent thermal conductivities ranging from 0.032W/mK to 0.037W/mK and exceptional acoustic properties – ideal for this project were noise from the studio and snug den needed to be kept to a minimum to prevent disturbing the neighbours.
“As a designer you are often met with challenging briefs and it’s a real blessing when you discover products that meets the project’s requirements. We managed to construct this new building in four weeks and thanks to Knauf Insulation’s easy to handle products the installation process only took one day - contributing significantly to the overall project build.” concluded Hamish.
