Knauf Insulation is to appear in Channel 4’s new series, Grand Designs Abroad, which is due to be screened during September and October this year (Stop Press: Wednesday, 29 September). The UK’s leading manufacturer of insulation materials supplied a range of products for use in the restoration of Chez Jallot, a 200-year old manor house in central France.
The property – “in need of refurbishment” – was bought by Doug Ibbs and Denise Daniel as a potential family home and guesthouse in February 2003. Restoration, in keeping with French architecture, started in July 2003 with progress being filmed for screening as one of the subjects in a new, eight part ‘overseas’ series of the popular Grand Designs programme fronted by Kevin McCloud
‘Le Chateau’, as it’s known locally, is situated in the heart of the French countryside near Vidaillat, about 25 miles east of Limoges. Built around the turn of the 19th century, its rich and colourful life nearly came to a violent end during the Second World War. Used as a base by the French Resistance, it was put to the torch by German troops in July 1944 and, for the last 60 years, only its granite walls have survived.
As the programme reveals, bringing Chez Jallot back to life presented Doug and Denise with many challenges and when it came to insulating the building, Doug contacted Knauf Insulation for their advice. To satisfy Les Exigences Thermique de la Reglementation (RT 2000) – the French equivalent of ‘Part L’ of The Building Regulations – Knauf Insulation recommended a number of products: Polyfoam® Floorboard for floor insulation on the ground floor, Crown® FrameTherm and Crown® Loft Roll for roof areas and Polyfoam® Linerboard for the window and door returns.
By far the largest component requiring insulation was the building’s 600 mm thick, solid granite walls and these posed a very specific problem. Clearly, retaining the building’s appearance was vital and this ruled out any form of insulation and consequent cladding or rendering on the outside of the wall. So, as an alternative, Knauf Insulation recommended an internal, independent lining system. The specification featured two, 50 mm thick layers of Crown® DriTherm Cavity Slab – a semi-rigid slab of high performance glass mineral wool insulation – held in place by a lightweight, galvanised steel framework designed to receive a drylining finish. The system has a remarkably small footprint and, apart from achieving the thermal insulation performance target required, also provides two other benefits as ‘standard’: it ensures there will be no penetration of damp and, of course, being glass mineral wool it’s also non-combustible.
“It’s a very simple, easy-to-use system,” Doug testified, adding, “and it also made squaring up the walls and overcoming the many irregularities much easier.” The system’s framework of lightweight, ‘U’ and ‘ ‘ section galvanised steel channel is erected 50 mm away from the face of the wall. The first layer of insulation material is then placed between the wall and the rear of frame to isolate the frame, keeping it ‘warm’ and preventing thermal bridging. The second layer of insulation material is then installed between the individual studs. A vapour control layer is then fixed to the front of the frame before adding plasterboard and finishing the surface.
“Installing insulation in refurbishment projects can provide a bit of a challenge!” said Stephen Wise, Manager of Knauf Insulation’s Insulation Academy and Technical Advisory Service, adding, “It generally needs some ‘creative thinking’ to provide a solution that successfully addresses their unique circumstances, often whilst working within a limited range of options. Fortunately, Knauf Insulation has a wide range of products in its armoury and our experience means we can fully use them to develop equally unique and creative solutions.”
