What is BIM?

BIM can best be described as:

“The shared use of structured data” within the design, construction (or retrofit), operations/maintenance and deconstruction of a building”.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) will have a major impact on the design, construction and operation of a building over its life time and as such is set to revolutionise the way buildings are procured and managed in the future.

BIM has the potential to deliver capital expenditure savings of approximately 15-20% per project and its use will be compulsory on all Government funded projects by 2016, and when you take into account the fact that 44% of all construction projects are Government funded you can understand why the Government is driving its implementation.

BIM2The potential benefits that BIM could bring apply equally to the private sector, so both sectors should in the future be in a position to take advantage and deliver benefits for projects across the built environment.

A comprehensive library of BIM Objects for our products (material objects) and construction build ups (material layer sets) are available free of charge and in the following formats:

  • Autodesk Revit
  • Graphisoft ArchiCAD
  • Bentley Microstation
  • Nemetschek Vectorworks
  • IFC (Industry Foundation Class)

We have structured our product datasets based strictly on the current UK COBie templates and have generated our product data in IFC (Industry Foundation Class) in accordance with ISO 16739:2013 using strict software driven processes to ensure our data is high quality and consistently defined.

This is one of first steps towards full open interoperability, which will ensure an easier transition for the project team when engaging in proper Level 2 BIM projects, and looking forward to the future, will be essential for Level 3.

In essence we have produced state of the art, future proof BIM materials which meet both present and future requirements, something that not all product manufacturers can claim.
