Up-skill for Green Deal
Knauf Insulation has been working extensively to help contractors prepare for the launch of the Green Deal and ECO. With an increased focus on solid wall insulation measures, the company has launched a new Accredited Installer Scheme, which is aimed at up-skilling tradesmen of all disciplines who are looking to take advantage of the Green Deal and ECO.
Courses are provided at a dedicated ThermoShell® Training Academy in Birmingham, where tradesmen can become approved to install Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) and External Wall Insulation (EWI) systems. The training consists of a thorough theoretical workshop followed by practical sessions where the attendees put what they have learned into practice.
Following the course, a member of the training team will then inspect three subsequent installations to ensure the on-going quality of the work, before awarding the contractor full accreditation. By only supplying its EWI and IWI systems to approved contractors, Knauf Insulation is able to offer long-term guarantees of the system’s integrity and performance.
Knauf Insulation has trained around 500 installers at the training centre and courses are filling up every week as the interest grows.

Ready for CPR in July 2013
As the EU Construction Products Directive (CPD) is replaced by the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and becomes compulsory for countries within the European Economic Area (EEA) from 1st July 2013 we are well underway with ensuring all Knauf Insulation products and systems are compliant.
The new regulation will require products and systems manufactured and sold in EEA countries to have initial type testing, factory production control, external surveillance and labelling, certification with declarations of performance to allow CE marking.
Knauf Insulation will ensure all products comply with the above and will have the required Declaration of Performance documents relating to each product which will be referenced on packaging and/or labelling.
We are drawing up a Declaration of Performance for all our construction products which are covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN) or conform to a European Technical Assessment (ETA) and we will adapt our labels or packaging to include the mandatory CE marking with a link to the Declaration of Performance, which will be made available electronically through our website: http://knaufinsulation.com.
Most of Knauf Insulation’s construction products already comply with the CPR as they have been placed on the market and have the CE marking affixed in accordance with the CPD before 1st July 2013.
BBA for ThermoShell EWI System
BBA is the UK’s major authority, offering approval and inspection services to manufacturers, installers, construction products and systems. BBA certification is only awarded after systems or products have successfully passed a broad assessment involving laboratory testing, on-site evaluations and inspections of production. Knauf Insulation is pleased to announce that it’s ThermoShell Rock Plus EWI system has met all the requirements set out by the BBA under the European Technical Approval Guideline (ETAG) 004.
The ThermoShell Rock Plus EWI system is a cost effective solid wall insulation solution ideal for a wide range of buildings, including low-rise residential properties, commercial buildings and buildings which are more severely exposed to the elements.
Designed to last for the lifetime of the building, the system shields the existing façade, whether brick, stonework, concrete or clay block work, from the effects of weathering – extending the longevity of the building but also providing the opportunity to enhance and upgrade its appearance.
Additionally, the system can upgrade a property to current Building Regulations and beyond, drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions and in turn helping to significantly lower energy bills.
Phil Rigby, Product Manager for Rock Mineral Wool at Knauf Insulation comments: “Here, at Knauf Insulation, we are committed to developing sustainable solutions for energy efficiency and we are delighted that our ThermoShell Rock Plus EWI system has met the rigorous standards required by the BBA. The certification demonstrates that our manufacturing processes are at an extremely high standard and also offers our customers another assurance of quality.
“Receiving BBA certification for our EWI system couldn’t have come at a better time. With the Green Deal now underway, there is an increased focus on thermally upgrading the 6.6 million solid wall properties in the UK and our EWI system is the ideal solution in many cases.“

Rocking it out
The move aims to simplify the product range for specifiers, contractors and merchants, by more closely aligning the product with its intended use. In this instance, Earthwool Building Slab is designed for us in the building envelope in both residential and non-residential projects.
Available in a range of densities up to 140kg/m3, Earthwool Building Slab is a semi-rigid to rigid rock mineral wool slab with excellent acoustic, thermal and fire properties. As a multi-purpose product it is suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including partitions, flooring and pitched roofs.
As well as offering superior thermal performance, Earthwool Building Slab delivers excellent acoustic performance and fire protection, achieving the unbeatable A1 fire classification. In addition, Earthwool Building Slab is manufactured using Knauf Insulation’s revolutionary formaldehyde-free ECOSE®Technology, which delivers unprecedented levels of sustainability and usability.
Phil Rigby, Product Manager – Rock Mineral Wool at Knauf Insulation, commented: “Our aim with the rebranding was to make it really clear about what application the products are for, so that specifiers and contractors can be sure they are selecting the correct product for the job. The Earthwool Building Slab is the first in a series of products that we will be introducing as part of this rebrand – we will also be launching a range of specialist products later in the year for applications such as heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, industrial and fabrication.”

Polyfoam gets an A Rating
After extensive testing by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Knauf Insulation’s Polyfoam ECO range of extruded polystyrene products has achieved a certified BRE Green Guide Rating of “A”. The Polyfoam ECO range are the only extruded polystyrene products to be independently assessed by the BRE allowing specifiers to have the utmost confidence that the products provide a proven sustainable solution.
This is in addition to the many other benefits offered by the Polyfoam ECO range such as zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a global warming potential (GWP) of less than five.
Polyfoam ECO is free from CFCs, HFCs, HCFCs and any other material with ozone depletion potential in its manufacture and content, as well as being 100 per cent recyclable.
Maria Morgan, Product Manager, Polyfoam XPS and XPE at Knauf Insulation, comments: “Sustainability is a key market driver for construction projects and as such we are constantly looking to enhance the environmental performance of our products. What’s more, we are committed to providing specifiers with proven third party verification of our products performance.
“BRE testing is a robust procedure in which the product, as well as the manufacturing process and materials, are closely scrutinized, resulting in a trusted and independently verified rating – which we feel is an extremely positive endorsement of our product.”
In response to the ever-increasing thermal performance requirements demanded by the Building Regulations, we have also extended the Roofboard Extra range by introducing a single board thicknesses of up to 240mm. U-values as low as 0.13W/m2K can now be achieved on an inverted roof with the installation of a single layer of Polyfoam ECO – providing significant labour and cost savings for contractors.
The Standard and Extra range of Polyfoam ECO has a thermal conductivity of 0.033W/mK.
