Malcolm Allan Housing Project,

11th February 2008
Project:
Malcolm Allan Housing Project, Westgate, Inverurie
Main contractor:
Malcolm Allen
KI Project Manager:
John Band
Architect:
TCD Architects

CHALLENGE

Aberdeen’s Malcolm Allan Housing and TCD Architects have created three hundred houses in sought-after Westgate, a beautiful countryside location outside the market town of Inverurie. The development comprises fourteen styles of residential properties, from two bedroom to seven bedroom homes. With four years’ work left to complete the project, over half the homes have already been sold.

Malcolm Allan Housing wanted to use an insulation product in the homes which would thermally and acoustically insulate the pitched roofs of its three hundred residential property development at Westgate, Inverurie (Aberdeen). It was also essential that the product was easy to cut and install with the vast number of homes to cover.

SOLUTION

Malcolm Allan Homes -Interior

All properties have been kitted out with Knauf Insulation’s Crown Rafter Roll 32, an unfaced semi-rigid roll of glass mineral wool with extra high thermal performance.

Insulating between the rafters of pitched roofs of both new build and existing properties, Crown Rafter Roll 32 is easy to cut and friction fit between rafters. Crown Rafter Roll 32 has a thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/mK and is therefore ideal for the properties in the Westgate development, which need to achieve U-values of 0.2 W/m2K.

Crown Rafter Roll 32 has excellent sound absorption characteristics. Furthermore, it allows water vapour to pass freely through it, enabling constructions to breathe. It can be used either as a single or double layer between rafters, or as the first layer of a two-layer system in combination with Polyfoam Linerboard. Malcolm Allan Housing has friction fitted its pitched roofs with Crown Rafter Roll, thereby completely filling the rafter spacing and eliminating air gaps.

Speaking about the Westgate development and the installation of Crown Rafter Roll 32, Malcolm Allan Housing’s Bert Lyon commented: “Knauf Insulation’s Crown Rafter Roll 32 has been spot on. It is easy to cut and install, and ensures all our homes have excellent insulation capabilities. With Home Information Packs now high on any home buyer’s agenda, it is crucial that our properties perform in the insulation stakes.”

Made from non-combustible inorganic glass wool, Crown Rafter Roll 32 is odourless, rot proof and nonhygroscopic. It does not sustain vermin, and will not encourage the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria. Crown Rafter Roll 32 is made from recycled glass bottles and its manufacture has a low impact on the environment and is classified as Zero ODP and Zero GWP. Up to fifteen glass bottles can be used in one roll.
